1994: A mortar bomb exploded in the main market square in Sarajevo killing 68 and wounding 200 people. For many observers, that event marks the day when public opinion in Western Europe and America started pushing for international direct intervention to cease the war. Many of us remember the shock of seeing this attack on TV. Why this one? The war had started almost three years before that. Maybe we could better relate to people doing such a mundane activity as going to the market. It could have been us there.
Today the market place with its new modern roof is buzzing with activity.
1994: Une roquette explose sur le marché de Sarajevo tuant 68 personnes et faisant 200 blessés. Pour de nombreux observateurs ce jour marque une poussé importante dans l'opinion publique occidentale de la nécessité d'une intervention internationale pour stopper la guerre. Nombreux parmi nous se rappellent avoir été particulièrement choqués en voyant cette attaque sur la télévision. Pourquoi celle-ci alors que la guerre battait son plein depuis presque 3 ans déja? Peut-être que parce-que aller au marché est une activité de la vie courante que nous faisons tous. Ca aurait pu être nous finalement.
Aujourd'hui le marché avec son nouveau toit bourdonne d'activité.
