Počitelj

Počitelj has been restored to its original Ottoman splendor. Situated less than half an hour south of Mostar it is worth a stop. The Hadzi-Alija Mosque has a stunning view on the Neretva conducive surely to heightened devotions. If you're brave or the sun takes pity on you (in summer sunset is advised) you should go up to the Sahat-kula, a silo-shaped fort that towers from the top of the hill above the town. It once housed watchmen and military to guard against possible invasion from the Neretva Valley. Now the village is home to artists among which the famous Safet Zec.

Photos Sophie Limonnier

In the summer rafting on the Neretva river is more of a leisurely view of the breathtaking canyons. If you're looking for the adrenalin do it in spring when the snow melt and the river is wild!

Mak Dizdar

Mehmedalija "Mak" Dizdar (Stolac 1917 - Sarajevo 1971) was a Bosnian poet, considered one of the greatest Yugoslav poets of the second half of the twentieth century.

This poem resonates with the lives of most Bosnians but as all great poetry it touches the hearts of myriads of people: those who find themselves exiles in this turbulent world, those who would like just once to be seen as they truly are.

˝You know nothing about my wealth

Hidden from your mighty eyes

(You don’t know that fate

Has deemed

And dealt me

Much more

Than

You

Surmise)

You’ve decided to root me out at any price

But nowhere will you find the real road

To me˝

from “Roads,” Dizdar, 1999: 25 – Translation by Francis R. Jones

Last night James Blunt gave a great concert in Sarajevo. His song ˝no bravery˝ which he says was inspired by his time as a soldier in ex-Yugoslavia was accompanied by a video footage of the war. I thought it would be strange for the audience to see things through the eyes of the one sitting on the tank but they all just sang along.

BHL! BHL!

Last Wednesday the French intellectual figure Bernard-Henri Levy presented in Sarajevo his film ˝Bosna!˝ 1994) followed by another short movie ˝Un jour dans la mort de Sarajevo˝ (1993). He announced that there would be a debate in between both as many of the characters of the first film were present that night (including Gal. Divjak who got an ovation). Instead of a debate we got a speech from the man in the white shirt himself. He shared a funny anecdote. Sometime during the Bosnian war he had managed to get Alija Izetbegović then president of Bosnia and Herzegovina to Paris and took him to a public projection of the film ˝Bosna!˝. The audience was shouting ˝BHL! BHL! short for Bernard-Henri Levy as he is called in France. Izetbegović remarked humorously that they probably meant ˝Bosnie Herzégovine Libre˝ or ˝Free Bosnia Herzegovina˝!
Without being fans, BHL is in our minds the first in France who was vocal in denouncing the war in Bosnia and trying to get public opinion to care. So hats off!

Alors chapeau bas!

It's all mountains! - Que de montagnes!

In the BBC documentary ˝The fall of Yugoslavia˝, Haris Silajdžić, now president of Bosnia and Herzegovina recalls how in Dayton when negotiating a corridor to connect Goražde to the rest of the Bosniak-Croat Federation the Americans had tried to accelerate the process by introducing a 3-D video rendering of Bosnia which had been used to train their jet pilots. Looking at it the main American negotiator exclaimed ˝but it's all mountains!, you're arguing about mountains!˝

The first time we tried elderflower cordial was two years ago when we walked to the water falls of Skakavac not far from Sarajevo. After the long walk we sat in an improvised road-side café where we were served this cold drink with an exotic taste.
Recently a friend of ours made it and it reminded us of that day. Here is the recipe if you want to try it!

Elderflower cordial recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 litres of boiling water
  • 1 kilo of white granulated sugar
  • 20 large elderflower heads (if they are small, pick more)
  • 55g of citric acid (in pharmacies or in ready-made mix for jams)

In a deep saucepan pour the boiling water onto the sugar and stir. Leave to cool, stirring every now and then to dissolve the sugar. When cool add the citric acid, the lemons (zested and sliced) and the elderflower heads. Leave to steep for 48 hours.Strain twice through sterilised muslin Using a jug and funnel carefully pour into hot sterilised bottles

Laisser infuser 24 heures. Filter et verser dans des bouteilles stériles.
