Sarajevo - Ashkenazi synagogue - La synagogue ashkenaze

In the 16th century the Jewish community grew drastically when following the expulsion from Spain, Sephardic Jews were welcomed into Ottoman lands. At the time, Sultan Bayezid II, who declared: "They tell me that Ferdinand of Spain is a wise man but he is a fool. For he takes his treasure and sends it all to me." The Ashkenazi Jews came mainly with the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. Before WWII the Jewish community in Bosnia and Herzegovina counted more than 15 000 souls. Some 12 000 were murdered during WWII and immigration reduced the community which counts about 700 in Sarajevo at present. While Sarajevo once had five functioning synagogues, these days only the Ashkenazi synagogue functions all year round while the Sephardic synagogue is now the Jewish museum (not shown here).

Au 16ème siècle la communauté juive s’est agrandie par l’accueil des juifs sépharades qui expulsés d’Espagne étaient les bienvenus en terre Ottomane. A l’époque le Sultan Bayezid avait déclaré : ˝On me dit que Ferdinand d’Espagne est un homme sage mais c’est un imbécile parce qu’il prend son trésor et me l’envoie.˝ Les juifs ashkénazes sont ensuite venus avec l’empire Austro-Hongrois. Avant la deuxième guerre mondiale la communauté juive en Bosnie-Herzégovine comptait plus de 15 000 âmes. Avec plus de 12 000 morts durant la deuxième guerre et de nombreuses vagues d’immigration la communauté de Sarajevo est maintenant réduite à près de 700. Alors qu’il y avait cinq synagogues avant la deuxième guerre, seule la synagogue Ashkénaze fonctionne toute l’année. La synagogue sépharade (non montrée ici) abrite maintenant le musée d’histoire juive.
