Sarajevo library - Bibliothèque de Sarajevo

The Sarajevo library built in a moorish style during Austrian rule has been a target of destruction during the recent war. Its renovation has started years ago and it will be a good candidate to be the slowest in the whole country. It contained unvaluable texts related to the history of the Balkans among which the famous Sarajevo Haggadah a rare Jewish artefact, the story of the exodus illustrated. This manuscript and others were saved from the flames by the librarians. So much for their book-worm image, these people are actually heroes. Their courage has not worn out and these days they continue to promote knowledge against all odds.

English speakers can enjoy the novel by Geraldine Brooks, People of the book inspired by the epic of how the Sarajevo Haggadah survived till now. If you want to see the manuscript it is now kept at the National Museum on zmaja od Bosne. We've never seen the room open though!

La bibliothèque de Sarajevo construite dans un style pseudomauresque pendant la période autrichienne a été la cible d'attaques de mortier durant la dernière guerre. Sa rénovation a commencé il y a des années et est en passe de devenir la plus lente du pays. La bibliothèque contenait des manuscripts inestimables sur l'histoire des Balkans y compris un manuscript en hébreu racontant l'éxode illustré, la Haggadah de Sarajevo. Ce manuscript et de nombreux autres furent suavés des flammes par les bibliothéquaires. Loin de leur image de rats de bibliothèque ces gens sont devenus des héros. Et leur héroïsme ne faiblit pas de nos jours alors qu'ils continuent de préserver les sources de savoir. La Haggadah est maintenant conservée dans une pièce du musée national sur zmaja od Bosne où vous pourrez la voir bien que nous n'ayons jamais vu la pièce ouverte!
