Travnik - ˝Time of the Consuls˝ - ˝Le temps des consuls˝

The building usually presented as the seat of the French consultate is right in the center of town with its brown facade. Historians dispute this version but one can nevertheless have a cup of coffee at the cafe ˝Consul˝right next to it in memory of Bonaparte's envoy to Travnik at the time when it was still the capital of Ottoman Bosnia. The Austrian consulate is now the Music School and is a lovely building surrounded with a lovely park. The novel by Ivo Andrić (Nobel Prize winner 1961) Bosnian Chronicle tells the story of the consulates but it also depicts the atmosphere of today's Travnik. Nothing has changed much.

˝All Travnichiani, without exception, like to appear unruffled and to affect an air of impassivity. Yet the rumored arrival of a consul - now a Frenchman, then an Austrian or a Russian, then again all three of them together - caused them to worry and entertain hopes (..)˝ Ivo Andrić - Bosnian Chronicle, p.12.

Le bâtiment généralement présenté comme étant l´ancien consulat français à Travnik est situé au centre de la ville avec une facade brune. Les historiens ne confirment pas ce fait mais on peut toujours prendre un café au café ˝Consul˝ juste à côté en mémoire du consul envoyé par Bonaparte dans cette ville qui était à l'époque la capitale de la Bosnie Ottomane. Le consulat autrichien est maintenant l'école de musique et est entouré d'un joli parc. Le roman de Ivo Andrić (prix Nobel de littérature 1961) La chronique de Travnik décrit l'histoire des consuls mais l'atmosphère qu'il décrit pourrait être la Travnik d'aujourd'hui.
